Mortgages for First Responders in Columbus
Law enforcement officers, emergency medical technicians, paramedics and other first responders work to keep the public safe.
In recognition of the value their service brings to the Columbus community, The Ohio Housing Finance Agency’s (OHFA) Ohio Heroes program offers discounted mortgage rates for Ohio first responders.

Do You Qualify?
The following eligibility requirements must be met for first responders who would like to take part in the Ohio Heroes program:
- Credit score requirements for loan type (Conventional, USDA, and VA Loans: 640 or higher FHA Loans: 650 or higher).
- Must meet the debt-to-income ratios for loan type.
- Income and purchase price limits must be met, which will vary by county.
- Must work in one of the following careers:
- US Military (veterans, active duty, national guard, or member of reserve components (includes a surviving spouse)
- Police, firefighter, volunteer firefighter, EMT or paramedic
- Healthcare profession: physician, nurse practitioner, nurses (RN and LPN) and STNAs
- Teachers in pre-K through grade 12, school administrators, and counselors
The Ohio Heroes Mortgage Assistance Program
Applicants of the Ohio Heroes program must also complete a free homebuyer education course through the OHFA (the OHFA’s MTC Basic program). OHFA’s streamlined education program allows you to complete a course offered by any U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)-approved counseling agency in Ohio.
